Bundesverdienstskreuz für Shmuel Bahagon

Shmuel Bahagon, hat in Anerkennung seiner besonderen Verdienste um die israelisch-deutschen Beziehungen das Bundesverdienstskreuz am Bande erhalten.

Botschafter Rudolf Dressler nahm die Auszeichnung in seiner Residenz in Herzliya vor.

In der Residenz des deutschen Botschafters in Herzliya bei Tel Aviv wurde dem israelischen Medienberater Shmuel Bahagon durch den deutschen Botschafter, S.E.
Rudolf Dressler, das "Bundesverdienstkreuz am Bande" des deutschen Bundespräsidenten überreicht. Dazu waren zahlreiche hochrangige Ehrengäste und enge Familienmitglieder eingeladen.

Im folgenden dokumentieren wir die Laudatio des deutschen Botschafters, die Gratulationsbriefe von Botschafter a.D., Dr. Niels Hansen, und seiner Gattin, sowie von Michael Häckel, Honorarkonsul von Panama in Deutschland, und seiner Schwester Martina. Daran anschließend finden Sie die Dankesrede von Shmuel Bahagon.

Rede des deutschen Botschafters, S.E. Rudolf Dressler:

"Dear Mr. Bahagon, dear guests,

it is a pleasure and a great honour for me to inform you that the President of the Federal Republic of Germany Johannes Rau has decided to award you, Mr. Bahagon, with the Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany for your special contribution to Israeli-German relations and the reconciliation between our two states.

Despite your family's sufferings and the loss of close family members in the Holocaust you came to visit Germany at the age of 16 and you have continued to build bridges between Germany and Israel ever since.

In your work with and for the media, you always made every effort to give a fair and, at the same time, positive representation of Germany's support for Israel. You have focussed attention o­n the many future-oriented activities that have united Israel and Germany for many years.

We Germans know of course - and we will not forget - the terrible heritage that weighs upon our relations with the Jewish people and the Jewish state.

We are, therefore, deeply grateful to those who out of personal knowledge and conviction acknowledge in private but also in public, the positive developments since the founding of the Federal Republic of Germany and the efforts Germany has made to build a solid and meaningful relationship with the State of Israel - despite our past.

We are aware - and it has been brought to the knowledge of President Rau - that you, Mr. Bahagon, are o­ne of those who through their work have contributed to overcoming prejudices that still exist between our countries in an outstanding way.

Not o­nly have you done a tremendous work for a better understanding of Germany by many Israelis, you have also helped Germans to understand the problems and the particular situation of the State of Israel.

I am sure that lots of German groups and individuals who visited Israel will remember you as an extremely competent guide and a highly competent speaker o­n many issues in our bilateral relations.

Before I attach the Cross of the Order of Merit please allow me to read to you a message (see below) that I received for this purpose from o­ne of my predecessors in Israel, Dr. Niels Hansen, with whom you closely cooperated and with whom - among many other things - you prepared and organized a visit of the then-president Richard von Weizs?cker to Israel in 1985. And let me read to you a second message from Mr. and Ms. H?ckel from Munich (see also below).

Dear Mr. Bahagon, we hope that you will continue to work with us and for an even better understanding between Germany and Israel. Let me now present you with the Cross of the Order of the Federal Republic of Germany.

In Anerkennung der um die Bundesrepublik Deutschland erworbenen BESONDEREN VERDIENSTE verleihe ich HERRN SHMUEL BAHAGON das Bundesverdienstkreuz am Bande des Verdienstordens der Bundesrepublik Deutschland.

verlesen durch den deutschen
Botschafter:

"Lieber Shmuel,

zur Verleihung des Bundesverdienstordens durch den Bundespräsidenten übermittle ich Dir Barbaras und meine herzlichen Glückwünsche. Wer hätte diese Ehrung mehr verdient als Du? Seit Jahrzehnten bist Du bei der Intensivierung der Beziehungen zwischen unseren beiden Ländern aktiv. Du hast dabei vieles bewirkt. Dankbar erinnere ich mich an Deine Unterstützung während meiner Tätigkeiten in Israel. Auch seither hast Du Dich unermüdlich um den Ausbau der Partnerschaft bemüht. Ohne dieses, dein stetiges Engagement wäre es Dir kaum gelungen, in jüngster Zeit in Berlin so erfolgreich wichtige Kontakte zu knüpfen. Wir freuen uns mit Dir und gratulieren aufrichtig.

„Sehr verehrte Frau Müller, sehr geehrter Herr Botschafter,

für die Einladung zu Ihrem Empfang anlässlich der Ehrung von Herrn Shmuel Bahagon möchten wir uns ganz herzlich bedanken. Leider können wir aus dringenden Termingründen an dem Empfang nicht teilnehmen, was wir sehr bedauern.

Zu Herrn Shmuel Bahagon verbindet uns seit mehr als 15 Jahren eine tiefe Freundschaft, die sich aus unserer geschäftlichen Beziehung entwickelt hat Herr Bahagon hat in den vergangenen Jahren in seiner Funktion als Journalist und Medienberater immer wieder über die außergewöhnlichen Behandlungsmöglichkeiten am Toten Meer in den israelischen und deutschen Medien berichtet und trügt damit einen erheblichen Anteil daran, dass viele deutsche und israelische Patienten am Toten Meer Linderung und Heilung gefunden haben.

Auf diesem Wege sind viele deutsch-israelische Freundschaften entstanden. Auch dies ist sicherlich einer von vielen Beiträgen zur Völkerverständigung und positiven Kommunikation zwischen Israel und Deutschland, die Shmuel Bahagon durch seinen professionellen Einsatz und sein Engagement geleistet hat.

Dafür möchten wir unserem Freund Shmuel unseren ganz besonderen Dank aussprechen und ihm zu der hohen Auszeichnung gratulieren, die uns mit Stolz erfüllt.
Wir wünschen einen schönen und feierlichen Verlauf der Ehrung und verbleiben mit einem freundlichen Gruß von München nach Herzliya und Shalom

Dankesrede von Shmuel Bahagon

"Your Excellency, Honourable Ambassador Dressler, Honourable revered Mrs Mueller, Honourable Judge Bach, Honourable Ambassador Shoval, dear family, dear friends, ladies and gentlemen,

today is for me an important day which touches me profoundly. It is a great honour and joy for me to be distinguished by the Federal President Johannes Rau with the Federal Service Cross of the Federal Republic of Germany, and to have the pleasure of receiving this medal here in Israel from the hands of the German Ambassador to Israel, H.E. Rudolf Dressler. Thank you!

For the past 25 years I have been an active partner in improving the diverse and challenging relations between Israel and Germany. This activity has contributed to a better understanding and advancing of these relations. In this award I also see an acknowledgment of all those people who countinue to direct their various talents towards the improvement of relations between our two countries.

For me the positive results of all these combined efforts, prove that in the final analysis despite the highly developed technology at our desposal, the indvidual with all his strengths and weakness is the most valuable element on earth and will always remain so. This is a source of great pride especially on this day.

One can not discuss the culture of the Jewish People without mentioning the contribution of the German Jewish philosophers and spiritual leaders such as Moses Mendelssohn, Abraham Geiger, Martin Buber, Franz Rosenzweig, Gershom Sholem and Leo Baeck, just to name a few. German culture today would be completely different had these individuals not existed. Their contribution inspires us to this day, and this proves that the spirit which infuses German-Jewish relations today can exist not o­nly in both countries - Israel and Germany - but all over the world.

As the son of Holocaust survivors, I did not experience the moments of joys with my grandma (Oma), grandpa (Opa), uncles and aunts, as they were executed by the Nazis. As the son of Holocaust survivors I carry this burden with me. However, I know the new Germany. This new Germany is a true friend of the State of Israel as it has demonstrated since the beginning of diplomatic relations between the two countries in the 1960s.

I would like to thank each and every o­ne of you for honouring me with your presence, and I would like to express my appreciation to you for taking the time to share this special event with me. I wish all of us a Happy New Year, a year filled with activities ve shalom al Israel ve al kol Bney ha'adam - and peace for Israel and for all humanity."
